Charles and the kids arrived two days early before meeting with me and my mom. They took a leisurely walk to Cascade Gardens, Banff Park Museum National Historic Site, Banff Central Park, and Cave & Basin National Historic Site:
Charles definitely deserved a round of applause for not only flying with the kids from LA to Banff, getting the rental car, checking in to the Airbnb, but also taking care of them the whole week when I was in Taipei. Isn’t he a superman or what?

If Banff is the soul of the Rockies, then lakes gotta be the spirits of Banff. One of the tour guys we encountered claimed that Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined! We only got to visit a few famous ones. Here are my top 5 lakes in this trip:
Top 5: Bow Falls
Technically, it’s not a lake. Bow Falls is a well-known waterfall, which was featured in the 1950’s movie River of No Return, on the Bow River. The height of the fall is actually pretty short, but the large volume of the water creates a magnificent splash. The photos cannot justify its grand beauty.
Top 4: Lake Louise
It is THE most popular lake in Banff for its vibrant blue water and the postcard-perfect location. It is surrounded by snow-capped mountains like a turquoise gem in the palms.
Below is the picture that my friend took when she visited the lake two month earlier in April; completely frozen and still absolutely amazing in white.
However, due to its popularity, the crowd is unavoidable. If we visited at the peak time, the parking situation might have disappointed us.
Bow Lake might be the top 1 for the kids. There was much less crowded and a shoreline covered with pebbles and small rocks. The kids loved dipping their fingers in the clean ice-cold water. We even visited here twice. There was a designated picnic area for visitors to immerse in the scenic nature.
Moraine Lake shares the same favoritism with my Top 1 choice.
Frankly speaking, the closer view of the Moraine Lake, like Lake Louise, was not as pretty as in the pictures. Both lakes have some yellow-ish algal and tree pollen gathering on the lakeshore.
However, when we stepped on the top of the Rockpile Trail, the bird’s eye view just took our breath away:
The greens on the other side of the lake were gorgeous as well. There were a couple taking their wedding pictures just a few steps next to us.
The indescribable blue of Peyto Lake just easily won my heart. The shades of the blue change in seasons. The blue we saw in the summer was caused by the lightweight glacial rock flour that flows on the top layer of the lake. Beauty of nature, speechless...
In addition, the paved trail to the viewpoint was wheelchair friendly. Although it was hell of a push on the way up, I was more excited than my mom to be able to witness this stunning lake together.
